Beschreibung

We are currently living through times of high inflation, coupled with persistent high inequality, putting the poorest households under particular pressure to keep up with the cost of living. This seminar explores some of the ethical, political and economic challenges raised by (high) inflation, as well as methodological challenges for the social sciences that study it. The seminar will have three parts. In the first, we will discuss competing accounts of what inflation even is, and how it is and ought to be measured. In the second we will consider the potential harms (and benefits) of inflation. The third will provide a philosophical discussion of policy responses, with a specific focus on monetary policy and the institutional setting in which it takes place.
