Be it cleaning robots, Siri, ChatGPT or spam filters and weather forecasts. Increasingly, some have argued, AI is becoming “the new electricity” – we rely on it for even simple everyday activities and often do not even notice that we do. While AI undoubtedly has tremendous potential to improve our lives and make them more comfortable, it does not come without risks and limitations. Among the chief concerns raised in the context of modern AI are missing explainability and transparency, as well as potential machine or algorithmic bias. How can we ensure, even if AI systems become increasingly complex, that they will be fair, trustworthy and preserve important moral and legal rights? – These are the central questions we shall discuss in this course. The course will incorporate lectures held during the summer school “Philosophy & Computer Science” to take place in Bayreuth July 17th to 22nd. In addition, there will be two full days of discussions and presentations. To fully participate in this course, it will be highly beneficial to have previous experience in theoretical philosophy and/or computer science. By the end of the course, students will have a deeper understanding of the potential and challenges of modern AI systems, and will be equipped to partake in discussions about its use and development. |
