Beschreibung

This course examines international cooperation as one of the central theoretical and policy-relevant topics of IR. International cooperation has been an important area of theoretical development over the past few decades. It has engaged both rationalist and sociological perspectives to examine issues of global and transnational governance and the role of formal and informal institutions. The course addresses the role of different actors in international politics including states, international organizations, NGOs and civil society. Important topics include: problems of cooperation (collective action, public goods, common-pool resources); rationalist and sociological explanations of cooperation; the evolution of norms and institutions from regime theory to regime complexity; the role of international organizations (IOs) and non-state actors through international delegation and orchestration; institutional design features of IOs; cooperation through international law; and multilateralism, power, and distributive concerns.
