Beschreibung |

This course has two main objectives. The first is to introduce students to the central issue in the philosophy of mind, the mind / body problem, or to deepen their understanding if they already have some familiarity with it. The mind / body problem is the problem of whether the mental is, or is not, fundamentally distinct from the physical. The second main objective of the course is to examine some issues which lie at the intersection of philosophy and psychology, questions such as what dreams and hallucinations are; how we should think of mental illness; and whether computers can have minds. At each stage in this latter part of the course, students should consider how background beliefs about the mind / body problem might inform what one comes to believe about these specific issues, and vice-versa.
