The course introduces the main techniques used to measure the effects of policies,
events, and other interventions in empirical research. We will first go through the potential outcomes
framework, dicuss the problems potentially associated with observational data and see why experiments constitute the gold standard of causal inference.

In the absence of experiments, researchers use observational data and include covariates to address selection bias; in this context we will look at regression and matching, the two most popular methods of covariate adjustment.

We will then cover three identification strategies for observational data: instrumental variables,
difference-in-differences (and its generalizations in panel data) and the regression discontinuity design.
We will also discuss how you can describe variation in treatment effects and design tests of your research

You should have some experience in quantitative analysis and introductory statistics.
