It is normally thought that a rational agent intends to do what would be best conditional on the truth of her beliefs. Beliefs, as is sometimes put, are “the map by which we steer.” In this course we will ask whether, and to what extent, this is true. The course is planned as an investigation into the nature of belief and its role in guiding rational action. Some issues we will consider include: Does belief “aim at truth” or do pragmatic considerations “encroach” on rational belief? What is the nature of intention and how is it (conceptually/metaphysically) connected to belief? What is the relation between theoretical and practical reason?
