P6.iv: Entscheidungstheorie

Description: Standard decision theory makes choices look pretty easy -- you might list out your options, determine the consequences each of these options for the possible states of the world, and then check which option maximizes your utility or expected utility. Unfortunately, things often look much less straightforward when it comes to making choices in the real-world. Moreover, it is often the case that the most important choices (e.g. how we deal with climate change or a pandemic) are also the toughest, and those for which basic, standard decision theory seems to help the least. How should we decide in such cases? How much help can decision theory provide? In this seminar, we will look systematically at the many types of uncertainty which make real-world choices hard, and at possible strategies for responding to that uncertainty. To do this, we will read philosophical and decision-theoretic arguments applied to problems such as deciding whether to have children, how to regulate the genetic modification of organisms, and how to respond to climate change.
