 Cooperation and competition stand for fundamentally distinct modes of social organization and are associated with different kinds of individual behavior. At the same time, both of them are central to contemporary political and economic life. This seminar examines cooperation and competition as different modes of social organization from an integrated P&E perspective, drawing on economics (in particular game theory and behavioral economics) and philosophy (in particular political philosophy and action theory) to answer questions like these: How exactly do cooperation and competition differ from each other? What are appropriate standards by which to assess the advantages and disadvantages of each? Under what kind of circumstances is cooperation more desirable and feasible than competition? What institutional arrangements best realize the virtues of cooperation and competition?
