Suppose we find out that the universe is a deterministic system: that is, that, at any point in time, past events together with the laws of nature completely determine what the future will be like. Would this mean that we—who are, after all, part of the universe—are not really free? Would it mean that freedom is an illusion? Or in what sense could we be said to be free if that were true? Alternatively, would we have to think of ourselves as somehow “outside” of the natural order to think of ourselves as free? Relatedly: what about moral responsibility? Could we be morally responsible for what we do if it is true that the universe is completely deterministic? In other words, is moral responsibility compatible with determinism? Suppose, alternatively, that we find out that the universe is not deterministic. How could this change our views on whether we are free and morally responsible?

In this course, we will explore these kinds of questions, by looking at some of the most influential treatments of these issues in recent and contemporary philosophy.
