Beschreibung

Computer simulations are an increasingly important research tool, in the natural sciences, the social sciences, and even in philosophy. It is therefore useful to know how to use this new tool---and critical to understand what we can actually conclude from any given simulation study as well as what can go wrong. In this course, we will investigate computer simulation, with an emphasis on the so-called agent-based modeling technique which is commonly used in social science and philosophy. We will take a partially hands-on approach, for example working with the models we study, but please note that this is not primarily a programming course. Instead, the focus will be on applications of the simulation methodology to problems of interest to philosophers (and economists), critically evaluating applications of this methodology, and the philosophy of simulation. Students will nonetheless learn some programming basics and gain experience with simulations along the way.
