Biology is of increasing interest to philosophers and to other scientists (e.g. cognitive scientists and economists). This is in large part because humans are part of the biological world, and we are increasingly appreciating the importance of our evolutionary history. Many philosophers also contribute to theoretical biology, whether by bringing clarity to problematic concepts or applying formal tools from economics. In this course, we will discuss a selection of topics in the philosophy of biology, with an emphasis on evolutionary biology. We will begin by analyzing key concepts, e.g. biological explanation, function and fitness. We will thereby transition to the philosophy of evolution; evolution is frequently appealed to in casual argumentation, but also often miss-used and misunderstood. We want to be able to distinguish legitimate from illegitimate evolution-based arguments. Finally, we will consider how biology can be used to address major questions of enduring interest to philosophers, regarding for example the nature of rationality.
