Labor markets generate highly unequal wages: Some individuals earn excessive premiums, others barely anything. Is there anything unfair, or unjust, about these wage differentials? Or, differently put, is there such a thing as a just wage? In the seminar, we will carefully approach these questions from the perspective of political philosophy. Various views will be considered, e.g. libertarianism, egalitarianism and socialism. That way, students will acquire a deeper understanding of key values at stake - efficiency, equality, desert, fairness and justice. Furthermore, students will be introduced to some of the most central debates and themes linked to fair wages (e.g. the clash between Rawls's and Cohen's ideas). The main aim of the seminar is for participants to develop their own ideas and arguments on the topic within an open, constructive and discursive environment.
