Blockseminar concerned with Ecological Economics held by Dr. Steffen Lange (Institut für Ökologische Wirtschaftsforschung), taking place at 17.02.-19.02.2020.

The climate crisis, biodiversity loss and other environmental problems call for radical changes of the economic system. The concepts Green Growth, Post-Growth and Degrowth deliver strategies to reconcile environmental sustainability with high human well-being. A central difference between these concepts is their stand on economic growth. While some argue that growth is possible or even necessary for environmental sustainability, others argue for an end of economic growth to save the environment. In this course, students learn different theories that underlie such different positions – in particular from environmental and ecological economics. These theories help to understand important related discussions regarding decoupling, rebound effects and a good life for all within planetary boundaries. The course ends with an in depth discussion, what determines whether we should opt for Green Growth, Post-Growth and Degrowth.

In his doctorial thesis Dr. Steffen Lange addressed the topic of "Macroeconomics Without Growth" and examined as one of the first in Germany how we could run our economy without GDP growth.

Those interested in the topic who can't arrange to participate in the seminar are advised to enroll in the elearning course where e.g. the syllabus will be uploaded soon.
