P6.iii: Politische Philosophie

Critics of socialism point to the moral shortcomings of authoritarian states and the economic inefficiency of central planning. This course explores whether there are variants of libertarian and democratic socialism that offer a desirable and feasible alternative to both capitalism and familiar forms of state socialism. The readings will draw on historical discussions of council democracy, guild socialism and market socialism (relying on authors like A. Pannekoek,  G.D.H. Cole and O. Lange) and include contributions to contemporary political philosophy (for example by G.A. Cohen, J. Roemer and D. Schweickart) and current public debates (e.g., from journals like Jacobin, Catalyst and Dissent). We will consider prominent critics of the idea of socialism (such as F. Hayek and L.v. Mises) to see whether convincing responses to their objections are available, and explore the implications of recent advances in digital technology for the realizability of socialism.

Please register by sending an email to Gabriel Wollner before the end of August. Places are limited to 25.
