Society comprises a number of structured patterns, ranging from regularities of social interaction to large scale phenomena such as political mobilization or economic interaction. Some of these are are the effect of centralized influence factors, e.g., traffic law regulating which side of the street to drive on. Other regularities such as social norms emerge without any centralized driving force, being mainly driven by the interaction of many individuals and their gradual adaptation to circumstance. In this course, we are interested in the latter type of phenomena. We will study the emergence of conventions and social norms as general phenomena. We will also look at particular cases of relevance, such as the stability of corruption or the creation of belief bubbles. Lastly, we will consider phenomena on a larger time scale such as the emergence of gender roles or contractual arguments for the evolution of cooperation. The course will build on several seminal texts related to the topic. Besides following classic textual analysis, the course also introduces and applies formal techniques such as evolutionary game theory and computer simulations. It will assume familiarity with the content of Decision Theory I/GdE I.

Registration follows the usual P&E template. Official registration period is until September 7. Send me an email if you'd wish to partake. When the registration period is over I will notify you whether you got a space in the seminar. Note that notifications will only be sent out in late September, as I will be on holiday.
