KNOW THYSELF! The possibility and value of self-knowledge

Course abstract

The Oracle of Delphi’s injunction “Know Thyself” suggests that self-knowledge is both an achievement and a value:  having self-knowledge is good, or even an obligation; but achieving it may not be so easy. In this class we will investigate a variety of related questions: can we have self-knowledge at all? If we cannot, how should we be obligated to know ourselves? In contrast, we will also see the received view in philosophy according to which self-knowledge is actually the most secure and easy type of knowledge we have. If self-knowledge is so easily gained, does it have a value? We will start the course with the classic debate about self-knowledge, between Descartes and Ryle. We will then proceed to discuss some skeptical doubts about its possibility. We will finish the course by examining the linkage between self-knowledge and rationality, which can shed light on the question about the value of self-knowledge.
