In this seminar, we will discuss the most prominent contemporary accounts of free will. The seminar is designed to provide the students with the skills to navigate the intricate current debate, to critically analyse the various views on freedom, and to work on a question that lies at the intersection of philosophy and current neuroscience.

In the course, we will discuss mostly primary texts on the various positions on free will. In the first part of the seminar, we will review a selection of various variants of the most cutting-edge positions on compatibilism, libertarianism, hard determinism, and other views that are harder to classify with these classic distinctions. In the second part of the course, we will turn to the challenges to free will that arise from contemporary neuroscience and debate what impact these empirical results have on the debate.

·       P5*: 1x per semester, every student will be assigned as an ‘expert’ for that particular week’s topic. The students will be asked to review the texts for that week carefully and briefly present an independently conducted literature review in no more than 2 minutes.

P6.4 and P6.v: Over and above being expert once per semester, the students will write an essay on a topic of their choosing.
