Modern software systems (henceforth: machines) are being used in more and more areas of life: be it self-driving cars, assistance systems in hospitals, or simply vacuum cleaner robots – just about everything that surrounds us contains software. With this increasing pervasiveness in our everyday lives, however, it can also happen that machines harm humans. Think, for instance, about flight assistance systems failing or medical treatments being misapplied. In order to prevent such situations and to make the best out of the machines that increasingly surround us, it is essential to think about their effects already during their design.
In this line of thought, machine ethics is the field of study that focuses on designing and developing ethical machines, including artificial intelligence (AI) systems and robots. It involves applying ethical principles to machine behavior and decision-making, which can help prevent potential harm to individuals and society. Machine ethics aims to develop machines that can reason ethically, make moral decisions, and behave in an ethical manner, ultimately ensuring that the development and deployment of machines align with human values and interests.
In this course, students will learn about the main ideas and major debates in machine ethics. Among other topics, we will discuss the ethical implications of the development and application of machines and, in particular, AI. We will learn about ways to assess and prevent the potential negative impact of machines on society and individuals, for example, by learning about ethical guidelines and standards for the development and use of machines. Furthermore, we will familiarize ourselves with the design of rules and processes for the responsible use of machines, with the goal of taking informed positions on current efforts in the regulation of machines.
While a basic understanding of ethics is beneficial for the course, there are no strict entry requirements and all participants are welcome to attend. |
