Beschreibung

Computer simulations are an increasingly important research tool, in the natural sciences, the social sciences, and even in philosophy. It is therefore useful to know how to use this new tool---and critical to understand what we can actually conclude from any given simulation study as well as what can go wrong. In this course, we will investigate computer simulation, with an emphasis on the so-called agent-based modeling technique which is commonly used in social science and philosophy. The course involves learning how to use NetLogo, a popular and relatively easy-to-learn programming language and agent-based modeling environment. Students will be able to choose how much emphasis to place on the philosophical and programming aspects, respectively.

Class time will be divided between:

  • Discussion of the philosophy of simulation and of how simulations can be used to address research questions.
  • Working in small groups to solve tasks in the NetLogo programming language.
Therefore, in preparation for class, you should (for most weeks):
  • Read the assigned paper.
  • Watch the short programming tutorial video.
