Beschreibung

This course provides an overview of the politics of international economic relations and an understanding of relevant analytical approaches and empirical topics. It begins with a brief review of the principal theories in global political economy, and examines the interplay of ideas, interests and capabilities with regard to the role of states, international and domestic institutions, other domestic and transnational actors (e.g. firms, MNCs, NGOs, etc.) in international economic relations. The seminar then covers key topics in IPE including: the politics of international trade, evolution of the GATT/WTO system and regionalism, production and foreign investment, the global financial and monetary order, and development and foreign aid. The seminar also explores contemporary problems in global economic governance including environment and climate change, migration and labor. By the end of the course, students will understand central issues of IPE, be able to apply the theories to evaluate IPE issues, and critically assess their arguments.
