This course offers an introduction to Western political philosophy. After a brief historical introduction, which focuses on Aristotle, Hobbes, and Locke, the lecture first covers the topics of legitimacy, liberty, democracy, and distributive justice. It then turns to more applied issues such as health and justice and justice and the family, as well as questions of justice regarding current societal challenges, such as climate change.

The lecture course will take place on a 2 SWS fortnight basis in presence (starting on Oct 20; dates for 2023 are Jan 19 and Feb 02; further teaching will be done online).

In between the live lectures, you will find videos of interviews with experts on given topics on the e-learning platform.

The seminar course will take place on a 4 SWS fortnight basis in presence (starting on Oct 21; dates for 2023 are Jan 20 and Feb 03).


Registration is only necessary for the exam. You must have handed in the essay in order to register for the exam.

Erfordernisse zum Punkteerwerb

Written exam at the end of the term and short essay, to be handed in by 7 January (each counting for 50% of the total grade)
