P6.ii: Ethik

Normativity is a strange animal. On the one hand, normative facts are not part of the empirical world. No matter how much we know what is the case it does not mean that we know what ought to be the case. Nevertheless, normative facts seem to describe ideal worlds, guide actions, and are part of our practical reasoning. This seminar is an introduction to the nature of normative facts (i.e. metaethics) and hwo this facts play a role in our reasoning.

The objectives of this seminar are to gain an indepth understanding of
(i) Moore's attack on ethical naturalism,
(ii) emotivism and the rejection of non-naturalism,
(iii) Hume on "is" and "ought",
(iv) the relationship between the "right" and the "good",
(v) the nature of normative requirements and guidance,
(vi) the function of normative process requirements,
(vii) the normative force of reasoning,
(viii) incommensurability and practical reason, as well as
(ix) the connection between normativity, naturalism, and public policy.
