Beschreibung

This course provides an overview of empirical approaches to research in international relations (IR) and international political economy (IPE). The course’s objective is 1) to familiarize students with state-of-the-art research and the related debates and controversies in the field as ‘consumers’ of research, and 2) to enable them to utilize empirical methods as ‘producers’ of IR/IPE research. To this end, the course covers the following general topics: Logic of inquiry & theory building; concepts & measurement; causality & causal inference; qualitative methods including case studies, case selection, selection bias & process tracing; and quantitative regression and causal inference approaches common in international relations & political economy research. It will draw on readings from IR journals to demonstrate the application of different methods to questions in IR and to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these methodological approaches. The course is meant to enable students in undertaking their research projects.
