This course is concerned with two familiar – but actually quite mysterious – mental phenomena: imagination and dreaming. Questions to be explored include the following: What is the relationship between imagination and perception? What is the relationship between imagination and memory? And what are the limits on imagination? Then, what exactly does dreaming involve? Is it more like imagining while you are asleep or more like hallucinating? And – one of the most famous problems in philosophy – how can you ever know that a particular experience is taking place while you are awake and not just part of a dream?
