This course will be divided into two parts. Part 1 is on the conceptual foundations of Environmental Ethics. Part 2 is on Climate Ethics.

Part 1 will survey some of the main views on the value of nature and our duties towards it. It is natural to think that human beings have intrinsic value, and that we have obligations towards each other. But are there any other kinds of beings that are also intrinsically valuable and towards which we can have obligations? Perhaps animals are like this, because animals are sentient beings. But what about other living entities that are not sentient? Are trees, for example, intrinsically valuable, and could we have obligations towards them? What about non-living things? The first part of the course will deal with such questions and the some of the most influential answers to them in recent and contemporary philosophy.

Part 2 is an introduction to some of the main ethical questions related to Climate Change. The climate is rapidly changing and it seems clear that human activity is largely responsible. We know this will have huge negative impacts on present and future generations of human beings and other animals, and on whole ecosystems. What kinds of obligations follow from this fact, and who exactly is the bearer of such obligations? Part 2 will deal with such questions.
