Secession occurs when a group within a state’s territory creates a new state. Philosophical theories of secession attempt to ascertain the conditions under which a unilateral (as opposed to a consensual) secession is rightful. According to one view, secessions are justified only as a remedy for serious injustice like the persistent violations of human rights. A second view maintains that nations as such have a right of self-determination and, hence, a right to secede in order to have their own states. According to a third view, any majority residing in a given state’s territory has, in principle, the right to have their own state there. In the course, we will focus on the arguments for and against these three theories but also touch on topics that are closely related to the issue of secession: international law, democracy, nationalism, territorial justice, and just war theory. |
