Beschreibung

Organisations run the world. Businesses, internet platforms, government departments make important decisions about the future on a daily basis that can profoundly impact people’s lives. But if organizations don’t acquire knowledge about the world in a careful and curious way, decisions can go badly wrong. For example, some governments were woefully unprepared for the Covid-19 pandemic, even though the risk of a global pandemic were known in advance. When the financial system collapsed in 2008, many businesses were caught off guard even though the data showed thar risks were piling up. And in our age of rapid technological change many businesses & governments are facing disruptions that could pose serious risks.

In this seminar we explore how organizations can be equipped to deal with such challenges. We ask how they can act in a way that helps that anticipate trends and act wisely in response. To do so, we will discuss the 'social epistemology of organizations'. It examines how organizations seek information, acquire knowledge, and translate information into decisions. We seek to identify the characteristics of a ‘future proof’ organization: one that is motivated to acquire knowledge, that has developed norms and practices of information seeking that are truth-conducive, and that is motivated to act on these insights.

We'll study how approaches from virtue epistemology can be applied to organizations, and examine what behavioral science can teach us about the strengths and pitfalls of groups when making decisions. We will also ponder whether organizations need to develop new qualities as we enter the "exponential age" -- a time when exponentially improving technologies challenge organizations to adapt faster.
